What is the VOLO Modeled Range?

Most lab reports tell you whether a result is “normal” or not — a binary pass/fail based on population averages defined decades ago using broad reference populations. The VOLO™ Modeled Range, or VMR, does something fundamentally different.

The VMR is a personalized target interval range derived from data — not clinical convention. It represents the range of values statistically associated with the best long-term (15-year predicted) health outcomes for someone with your specific biological profile, across multiple domains of health simultaneously.

The VMR is not a textbook “normal” range. It is VOLO Health’s data-derived target zone — and in many cases it is meaningfully different from standard clinical reference ranges. 


The challenge with standard reference ranges 

Standard lab reference ranges were built to flag extreme outliers in a general population. They answer a narrow question... Is this value within a wide band shared by the majority (which is 95% in most circumstances) of people? They were not designed to tell you what value is optimal for your long-term health, or to account for the fact that what is “normal” for a 40-year-old man is not the same as what is “normal” for a 65-year-old woman. 

Two problems follow from this: 

  • A result that looks “normal” by standard ranges may still carry meaningfully elevated long-term risk for your profile. 

  • A result flagged as “abnormal” may be entirely appropriate given your age, sex, and health history. 

Standard ranges answer the question: “Is this value within a population average?” The VMR answers a more useful question: “What range is associated with the best long-term outcomes for someone like me?” 


How the VMR is derived 

The VMR is the product of a data modeling process — not clinical judgment, simple math, committee consensus, or disease-specific guidelines. That distinction matters. 

Trained across multiple health domains, not a single disease 

Published clinical benchmarks are built with a specific condition in mind — a cardiovascular guideline optimizes for cardiovascular risk, a diabetes threshold optimizes for glycemic control. The VMR is different. The model that produces it was trained simultaneously across multiple major health domains, including cardiovascular health, kidney health, metabolic health, brain health, inflammatory burden, longevity and more. 

Because the model is not anchored to any single disease or clinical specialty, the resulting range is not biased toward any particular outcome. It reflects where your biomarker value sits relative to the broadest possible picture of long-term health — letting the data define what is healthy, rather than inheriting assumptions from any one clinical tradition.

Personalized to your profile 

The VMR is not a single fixed range applied to everyone. It is adjusted based on personal characteristics, including: 

  • Age 

  • Biological sex 

This means the target zone shifts as your profile changes. A value that is well within the VMR at one stage of life may warrant closer attention at another — and the model reflects that. 

A process, not a preference 

There is no predetermined answer the VMR is trying to reach. The modeling process does not start from a target range and work backward. It starts from real-world outcome data — drawn from large-scale longitudinal datasets including the UK Biobank and US clinical cohorts — and identifies where values cluster among individuals with the best long-term health trajectories. The range is wherever the data leads. 

The VMR is derived from patterns in real-world health data across modeled outcomes — not designed around any single disease and not shaped by assumptions about what to look for.

Inside your VOLO™ Health & Wellness Report and the VOLO™ Biomarker Reference Guide, key biomarkers have a VMR.  In your health report, biomarker results are shown alongside your VMR. At a glance, you'll see: 

  • Whether your result falls within your personalized, data-derived healthy target interval.

  • Whether your trend is moving in a positive or concerning direction. 

This gives you a more complete picture of your long-term health — not just a pass/fail against a population average, but meaningful context about where your values sit relative to long-term outcomes across the domains the model tracks. 


Frequently asked questions 

Is the VMR the same as a standard lab reference range? 

No. Standard lab reference ranges apply to a broad general population and often are anchored to a specific clinical condition or specialty. The VMR is modeled specifically for you, derived from outcome data across multiple health domains simultaneously, and adjusted for your age, sex, and health profile.  

Why is the VMR modeled across all health domains rather than one? 

Because health does not work in silos. A biomarker value that looks fine from a cardiovascular perspective may still carry elevated risk for metabolic or kidney health. By training across all modeled outcomes at once, the VMR reflects trade-offs and relationships that a single-disease model cannot see. The goal is a target zone that is good for you overall — not just good for one domain. 

Does “outcome-agnostic” mean the model ignores disease? 

No. It means the model was not pre-designed around any particular disease as its target. The modeling process uses real disease endpoints — cardiac events, kidney disease, metabolic outcomes, dementia, mortality — as training signals across all domains. “Outcome-agnostic” means the model does not start with a clinical assumption about which condition matters most. It lets the data across all outcomes determine where the healthy range lies. 

Will my VMR change over time? 

Yes. As your health profile evolves, your VMR is recalculated to reflect your current biological context. This means your report stays relevant and accurate as you age. 

What if my result is outside my VMR? 

A result outside your VMR does not automatically mean something is wrong — it means that value warrants closer attention in the context of your overall long-term health picture. Your VOLO™ Score provides information around each result for you and your healthcare provider to review and discuss. 


The bottom line 

The VMR is not a replacement for your doctor or your standard lab results. It is a complementary lens — one that asks a different question. Instead of “is this value normal?” it asks, “what target interval is associated with the best long-term outcomes for someone with my profile, across every dimension of health the model tracks?” Used alongside standard clinical care, it supports a more proactive, personalized, and complete approach to your long-term health.
